Sending a box or two by mail is nice. Loading and shipping a 40-foot cargo container is newsworthy. A local all-news radio station sent one of their reporters, and the local Fox station sent a cameraman.

Part of our goal is to put Nigerian Jewry on the “radar screen,” to bring them to the attention of North American Jews the same way that the Abayudaya were brought to their attention. It was nice that our synagogue, Tikvat Israel, got such well-deserved recognition, too. We do many good things - we are a very caring congregation - and we should not be shy about letting the local community know about us.

When my friend Jeff Lieberman completes his film, more people will take notice of the Jews of Nigeria - just as they took notice of the Jews of Uganda when Debra Gonsher Vinik and David Vinik made their film, “Yearning to Belong.”
