Rabbi Howard Gorin presents a copy of the JPS Tanakh to Igbo Elder Yisrael Ben Yeremeyahu. This elder is trying to lead his community away from messianism toward normative Judaism. The Jewish Publication Society donated this and other copies of its Tanakh to further the education of Nigerian Jews.

A Picture Is Worth... A LOT!
Igbo Jews study the weekly Torah portion, Parashat Yitro in which Moshe’s father-in-law, Yitro, teaches Moshe the importance of delegating judicial responsibilities. For almost all of them, this was the first time that they held a Bible from a Jewish publishing house. These Tanakhim were a gift of the Jewish Publication Society.

Men, women and, yes, a few children celebrate this extraordinary event. Many visitors have made promises, promises that were never fulfilled. Tikvat Israel was true to its word.

I am very grateful to the people of your congregation who took their time to perform the gemilut chessed of packing the container. Help me to express my appreciation to them. I also express gratitude to all the donors of the items. Tell them that the majority of Nigerian Jews have learnt great Torah lessons from this laudable gesture.
